I hate social media and I hate the “niche for niche” thing.
If you revel in the obscurity of your interests above anything else, it’s immediately clear where your priorities are. You don’t find comfort in the unorthodox, you’re just trying too hard to differentiate yourself from everyone else. You’re not truly embracing individualism and uniqueness if you’re following any kind of trend because you want to be different. Even if that trend is "having niche interests" or whatever. Wanting to be different and being different are not the same thing. If you are genuinely different, then that's fine, but it still doesn't make you better than anyone else. You don't have to be into "niche" shit to be an individual.
Hating something solely because it’s popular is the dumbest fucking thing ever. I feel disconnected from the mainstream, but that doesn’t mean I’m completely averse to the art it has to offer. That would make me close-minded. As an outsider, why do you care about the group consensus of something? Be an individual and form opinions based on your own thoughts: how something makes you feel. There's nothing wrong with liking something super popular, whether you conform to societal norms or not.
I just can't stand when people treat being an outsider like something cool and mysterious, like something superior. I hate how prevalent that warped, idealized concept of “not fitting in” is nowadays. Genuinely way more annoying than being brushed off as a freak, because at least that kind of thing's easy to laugh off.
On a similar note, I hate when people call me goth lmao. It's happened so much, and it immediately shows when someone has the most surface-level, social media-influenced perception of alternative subcultures lol. I’m not goth, and I hate how any woman who dresses in all black is immediately slapped with that label and gets treated weirdly for it (see: fetishization). It’s wrong on so many levels, and it’s only becoming more and more normalized. I guess goth has always been one of those misunderstood subcultures, though. Just hate how things are currently steering.

Based
Date: 2025-01-11 08:33 pm (UTC)From:I never went out of my way to identify with any alternative communities for this reason, as I feel 1. it's gotten harder and harder to find spaces that aren't pretentious and 2. labeling myself like that limits my self-expression and it's not true to who I am as a person. I am in "alternative" spaces by way of who I am, not by way of the words I use to describe myself with. Not to say that those terms have no meaning, they're very important, but I personally choose not to use them.
I hope this made sense, lol.
