not necessarily the best or “scariest!!1!” creepypastas, just a bunch of different stories i like. i included short summaries and (ROUGHLY ESTIMATED) reading times for each listed item. the fucked up ones have content warnings

THE ESSENTIALS: popular stories worth knowing
Kris Straub – "Candle Cove" (~10 minutes)
you know this one. forum users discuss a strange puppet show they watched as kids and slowly remember how fucked up it was. the epitome of creepypastas: a captivating, short horror story that utilizes an internet-specific format
Ted Hegemann – "Ted the Caver" (~3 hours)
online journal detailing the author’s strange, unsettling experiences within a certain “mystery cave”. gets creepier with each entry. fantastic writing, i’d even recommend this to horror readers unfamiliar with creepypastas
Anonymous – "Anansi’s Goatman Story" (~25 minutes)
group of teens go camping. something joins them. nothing too crazy but a fun spooky story, like something that’d be a hit if you told it around a campfire
Eric Heisserer – "The Dionaea House" (~3-4 hours)
story ‘bout a fucked up spooky house told in an epistolary format through websites. makes you play Internet Detective by clicking through sites, but it’s not too hard to figure out if you’re computer literate (15-year-old me figured it out, so you probably can, too.) this one’s my favorite.

creepy museum exhibit won’t leave the author alone. very eerie atmosphere.
* this one and candle cove are included in an anthology called "Ichor Falls: A Visitor's Guide", though I've yet to read all of its stories... kris straub rocks, though, so check out his other stuff
theLittleFears – "Sudden Onset" (3 minutes, video/narration)
the horrors of sudden mental health issues in children. check out this entire channel for good stuff tbh, devi’s a fantastic storyteller
T.W. Grimm – "The New Fish" (~1 hour)
prison dudes tell a story about the world’s most viscous twink. really feels like some guys telling you about some paranormal fuck shit they witnessed. warning for descriptions of prison rape
Anonymous – "Snow Angel" (~10 minutes)
/x/ anon greentexts the scariest moment in his life. short monster story, good for what it is
False Door – "Rain Party" (~25 minutes)
mlp fanfic. the cmc get stuck in their treehouse during pouring rain that grossly mutilates anything that touches it. idk man it’s a fuckin mlp horror story.. warning for animal death (no, not just the technicolor cartoon horses)

detective investigates a cold missing persons case. inspired by a nightmare the author had. fantastic buildup and strong, descriptive imagery. bleak and extremely gruesome, not at all for those with a weak stomach…
Gavin Pitts – "Greasepaint" (~10 minutes)
crazy circus shit. unmedicated, vulgar surrealism. just read the fuckin story
Various Authors – "Dogscape" (~45 minutes)
earth’s surface turns into a living mass of dog flesh. riddled with plotholes if you’re paying attention, but this pasta is so creative and absurd that i have to marvel at it. the grossest story on this list, head’s up for animal death, rape, bestiality, fetus eating…
One White Whisker – "The Snoopy Dog" (VERY long read, 5+ hours)
a bottle of aftershave terrorizes a little boy. a lot of things terrorize this fucked up kid, actually. told through the eyes of a young child, so there’s an unreliable narrator and many run-on sentences. warnings for heavy themes of child sexual abuse/grooming and animal death
* note that the not hot but spicy website hosts a lot of other somethingawful creepypastas, so i recommend clicking through it
